Obesity in pets.
Posted on 2010-07-12 14:28:37
About 35% of pets are overweight. Excess weight on your pet can lead to a wide variety of health problems including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure atrhritis and other joint problems.
At an healthy weight, you should be able to feel your pets ribs easily, the abdomen should be tucked-in when looking at your pet from the the side and they should have a well defined waist.
Most overweight pets simply consume more calories than they burn, so feed your pet appropriate portions, go easy on the treats and give plenty of exercise.
What if my pet is overweight? Visit your veterinarian to ensure that the pet is not suffering from any medical conditions that may hinder weight loss. Follow your veterinarian's dirrections on diet and exercise.
Good luck! You and your four-legged family member can do it!!
