Tips for Taking Fido to the Vet

Does your canine buddy run when he hears the word ‘vet’? We know, coming to see us isn’t one of Fido’s favorite things to do, but it’s for his own good! Regular veterinary visits are very important to your dog’s health. A local Rosedale, MD vet offers some advice for taking your four-legged buddy to the vet in this article.

Stay Calm

Our canine pals are very perceptive, and will easily pick up on our emotions. If you’re nervous, Fido won’t take long to notice, and may become nervous as well. Take a walk, do a few jumping jacks, or listen to some relaxing music.

Crate Train

If Fido only sees his crate when he goes to the vet, he may bolt for cover as soon as he sees it. Get your furry buddy used to his crate or carrier, and give him treats and toys near it, so he associates it with good things.

Bring Treats

Bring a few of Fido’s favorite treats along. If you just happen to go through a drive through on the way home, order a plain hamburger for your canine friend. We don’t advocate doing this every day, but everyone needs a special treat now and then.

Don’t Reinforce Fido’s Anxiety

If Fido is acting nervous, you may instinctively want to pet him and sooth him, but be careful not to coddle him too much. You may be unintentionally rewarding him for his anxiety, which may actually reinforce his behavior.

Walk It Out

Before heading to your appointment, take your canine pal on a good, long walk to burn off excess energy. Your pooch will stay calmer before and after the visit if he’s a little tired. If you have time, why not visit the doggy park after your appointment? This will also help Fido form positive associations with going to the vet.

Be Prepared

Before your appointment, make a list of any symptoms you want to discuss with your vet. When you make the call to schedule the appointment, ask if you need to bring anything specific with you, such as stool samples.
